In Women: A Subtle Signature of Expression

Dimpleplasty is a minor aesthetic procedure designed to create natural-looking dimples in the cheeks or, less commonly, the chin. In women, dimples are often associated with softness, expressiveness, and youthful charm, and this procedure aims to recreate that subtle dynamic indentation in a controlled and predictable way.

Unlike major facial surgery, dimple creation is typically performed as a simple outpatient (OPD) procedure, meaning it does not require hospital admission or general anesthesia in most cases.

How the Procedure is Done

Dimple creation is performed from inside the mouth, which means there are no external visible scars.

The process generally involves:

  • A small incision made on the inner cheek (buccal mucosa)
  • Identification of a precise point on the cheek where the dimple is desired
  • A fine suture is placed between the inner cheek muscle (usually the buccinator muscle) and the underside of the skin
  • This creates a controlled tethering effect that forms a dimple when the patient smiles or moves the cheek

Initially, the dimple may appear visible even at rest, but as healing progresses, it settles into a natural smile-dependent indentation, which is the desired aesthetic outcome.

OPD Procedure and Recovery

Dimpleplasty is usually:

  • Performed under local anesthesia
  • Completed within 20–40 minutes
  • Done as a walk-in, walk-out procedure

After the procedure:

  • Mild swelling inside the cheek may occur for a few days
  • Soft diet and oral hygiene measures are recommended briefly
  • Dissolvable sutures or internal sutures are typically used
  • Most patients resume normal activities within 24–48 hours

Because the incision is inside the mouth, there are no visible external scars and minimal downtime.

How Long Do Dimples Last?

The longevity of dimples depends on how the healing process evolves:

  • Initially: dimples may appear more pronounced or visible even at rest
  • After healing (weeks to months): they settle into a more natural, smile-activated dimple
  • Long-term: the result is generally permanent because internal scar formation anchors the skin to the muscle

However, in some individuals, partial fading can occur over time as tissues adapt, making outcomes semi-permanent to permanent depending on healing response and technique.

Aesthetic Effect and Facial Expression

Dimple creation is a subtle but expressive enhancement. It does not change facial structure but instead:

  • Adds softness and youthful character to the smile
  • Enhances facial expressiveness
  • Creates natural light-shadow play on the cheeks
  • Improves perceived warmth and approachability of expression

The result is not an artificial indentation, but a dynamic feature that activates with expression, preserving natural facial movement.

Ideal Candidates

Dimpleplasty is suitable for women who:

  • Desire subtle enhancement of facial charm
  • Want a natural-looking smile accent
  • Have good skin elasticity in the cheek region
  • Prefer a minimally invasive outpatient procedure

It is less suitable for those seeking dramatic facial changes, as the goal is always refinement, not transformation.

Key Concept

The success of dimple creation lies in restraint. When placed correctly and kept subtle, it becomes part of the face’s natural language—a quiet detail that enhances expression without overpowering identity.
